英语寓言小故事:父亲和他的儿子
　　Story1:The Boy Bathing 　　A boy bathing in a river was in danger of being drowned. He calLED out to a passing traveler for help, but instead of holding out a helping hand, the man stood by unconcernedly, and scolded the boy for his imprudence. "Oh, sir!" cried the youth, "pray help me now and scold me afterwards."
有一天，有个小男孩在河里洗澡，遇到了危险，眼看要被淹死时，看见有人路过，连忙大声呼救。然而，那人却责备小男孩太鲁莽和太冒险。小孩回答:「请你还是先把我救起来，再责备吧。」 　　这个故事带出的启示就是:该说的时候说，该做的时候做。
　　Story2:The Lion and the Mouse 　　A lion was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up angrily， he caught him and was about to kill him， when the Mouse piteously entreated， saying: “If you would only spare my life， I would be sure to repay your kindness.” The Lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters， who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse， recognizing his roar， came and gnawed the rope with his teeth and set him free， exclaiming: 　　狮子睡着了，有只老鼠跳到了他身上。狮子猛然站起来，把他抓住，准备吃掉。老鼠请 求饶命，并说如果保住性命，必将报恩，狮子轻蔑地笑了笑，便把他放走了。不久，狮子真 的被老鼠救了性命。原来狮子 被一个猎人抓获，并用绳索把他捆在一棵树上。老鼠听到了他 的哀嚎，走过去咬断绳索，放走了狮子，并说: 　　“You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you， expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor; now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to con benefits on a Lion.” 　　“你当时嘲笑我，不相信能得到我的报答， 现在可清楚了，老鼠也能报恩。” 这故事说明，时运交替变更，强者也会有需要弱者的时候。
　　Story3:The Father and His Sons 　　A father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarreling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations，he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion;and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so，he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession，and ordered them to break it in pieces. They tried with all their strength，and were not able to do it. He next opened the faggot，took the sticks separately，one by one，and again put them into his sons' hands，upon which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in these words:“My sons， if you are of one mind， and unite to assist each other， you will be as this faggot，uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies;but if you are divided among yourselves ，you will be broken as easily as these sticks.” 　　有个父亲的儿子们常常互相争斗不休。他多次语重心长地劝说他们，尽管他苦口婆心， 仍无济于事。他认为应该用事实来教育他们，便叫儿子们去拿一捆木棒来。木棒拿来后，他 先把整捆木棒交给他们，叫他 们折断。儿子们一个个竭尽了全力都无法将它折断。随后他解 开了那捆木棒，给他们每人一根。他们都毫不费力地将木棒折为两段。这时，父亲说:“孩 子们，你们要像木棒一样，团结一致，齐心协力，就不会被 敌人征服;可你们互相争斗不 休，便很容易被敌人打垮。” 这故事说明，团结就是不可征服的力量，而内讧却只能耗损自己。
　　Story4:Belling the cat 　　Long ago， there was a big cat in the house. He caught many mice while they were stealing food. One day the mice had a meeting to talk about the way to deal with their common enemy. Some said this， and some said that. At last a young mouse got up， and said that he had a good idea.“We could tie a bell around the neck of the cat. Then when he comes near， we can hear the sound of the bell， and run away.” Everyone approved of this proposal， but an old wise mouse got up and said， “That is all very well， but who will tie the bell to the cat?” The mice looked at each other， but nobody spoke. 　　从前，一所房子里面有一只大猫，他抓住了很多偷东西的老鼠。一天，老鼠在一起开会商量如何对付他们共同的敌人。会上大家各有各的主张，后，一只小老鼠站出来说他有一个好主意。“我们可以在猫的脖 子上绑一个铃铛，那么如果他来到附近，我们听到铃声就可以马上逃跑。”大家都赞同这个建议，这时一只聪明的老耗子站出来说:“这的确是个绝妙的主意，但是谁来给猫的脖子上绑铃铛呢?”老鼠们面面相觑，谁 也没有说话。
