GRE数学函数的定义

　　设在某变化过程中的两个变量(variable)x和y, y随x而变化，而且依赖于x.如果变量x取某个特定的值，y依确定的关系取相应的值，则称y是x的函数.记作y=f(x)，其中x称为自交量(independent variable), y称为因变量(dependent variable). x的变化范围称为函数的“定义域”，与x对应的y的取值称为“函数值”，其全体称为函数的“值域”.GRE数学考试中会出现诸如括号、圆圈和方框等各种形式的函数表达式。

　　example, the expression x³+3x²-4 defines a function f that can be denoted by
　　f(x)=x³+3x²-4
